Message of Greetings from Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) Pisa

Our dear friend Francesco Greco left us on May 20th 2019.

When deciding which project to dedicate to Francesco an important path among those that are under the protection of CAI, Trail 181, was chosen.

Fundraising involved members of CAI Pisa and of the Seattle Subsection (USA). Other associations that had participated in the many initiatives of Francesco were also involved:  il circolo ARCI Cime Tempestose di Milano; il Bushwalking Club di Brisbane (Australia); e l’Over Forties Tramping Club di Christchurch (Nuova Zelanda).

The collection of funds reached the significant amount of € 3705.34, reflecting the great affection and esteem that many had for Francesco. This money will also enable other projects to be undertaken with those who have a passion for the mountains.

At present, given the fluidity of the COVID-19 situation, we are unable to determine a precise date for the work to be carried out, and therefore the inauguration of the new Trail 181 in September 2021 is uncertain. We will inform you of progress as soon as possible.

Members of Club Alpino Italiano (Pisa and Milano sections) have sent their warm regards and many thanks for the donation of approximately 460 euros (AUD800) received from various BAQ Inc. club members. More information will be provided soon with updates on the improvements to Trail 181 in the Apuan Alps to honour the memory of our friend Francesco. It is still hoped that a celebration will go ahead in Italy in 2021 (or 2022!!).

Francesco Greco developed a model of international hiking exchanges which enabled many to go walking in a foreign country accompanied by native hikers, seeing places through their eyes and making new friends of various nationalities. Our club has participated in numerous such exchanges since 1999.  Our donation will assist to:

a) fund a memorial trail in his beloved Apuan Alps, near Pisa in Italy - Trail No.181 will be restructured and equipped with new wooden signs.

b) provide opportunities for youth mountaineers exchanges.

Guest Speaker Michael Meadows  (Posted on Friday, 24th of January, 2020 and updated on Sunday, 9th February, 2020.)

Attendees at our first club night for 2020 were amazed by the daring acts and photographs of Post WW2 bushwalkers and climbers, mostly from the Brisbane area, as presented by Michael Meadows.  Michael is an academic researcher, published author and blogger.  Australian climbing history is the main focus of his book “The Living Rock” 2015, drawn from an extensive archive of documents, images and interviews relevant to the origins of climbing and bushwalking in Australia.
